Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii Data Breach Class Action Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

According to information recently published on their own website, on or around February 19, 2021, Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii learned that their computer systems had become encrypted due to “ransomware” deployed by an outside hacker. Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii’s investigation revealed a hacker accessed and ultimately extracted data from various company systems for over a week, between February 12, 2021, and February 19, 2021.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IMPACTED BY THE DATA BREACH?

Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii did not publish the communication notifying victims of the breach until February 14, 2022.[1] In addition, the notice and letters sent to victims do not explain why Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii waited approximately a year after the breach to start notifying victims.[2]

WHAT INFORMATION WAS EXPOSED IN THE DATA BREACH?

Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii has disclosed the following information was included in the data breach:

  • Full names,
  • Social Security numbers,
  • Addresses,
  • Dates of birth,
  • Driver’s license numbers,
  • Health insurance information,
  • Medical information,
  • Financial account information, and
  • Payment card information.[3]
