Memorial Health Data Breach Class Action Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

According to information submitted to the Maine Attorney General’s Office, Memorial Health System identified the presence of malware on its servers on August 14, 2021. [2] Memorial Health System determined the hacker accessed certain systems within its network on or about July 10 through August 15, 2021.[3]

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IMPACTED BY THE DATA BREACH?

Memorial Health System did not begin notifying victims of the breach until January 12, 2022.[4] In total, the data of approximately 216,478 individuals was compromised in the breach.[5] The letters to victims do not explain why Memorial Health System waited approximately six months after learning of the breach to start notifying victims.[6]

WHAT INFORMATION WAS EXPOSED IN THE DATA BREACH?

Memorial Health System has disclosed the following information was included in the data breach:

  • names,
  • addresses,
  • Social Security numbers,
  • medical/treatment information, and
  • health insurance information.[7]
