WHAT HAPPENED?

According to information recently submitted to the Maine Attorney General’s Office, on or around October 13, 2021, the National Math and Science Initiative learned of unusual and suspicious activity on the National Math and Science Initiative network.[1] The National Math and Science Initiative’s investigation revealed a hacker accessed certain private systems for almost an entire month, between September 23, 2021 and October 18, 2021.[2]

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IMPACTED BY THE DATA BREACH?

The National Math and Science Initiative did not begin notifying victims of the breach until February 7, 2022.[3] In total, the data of approximately 191,255 individuals was compromised in the breach.[4] The letters to victims do not explain why the National Math and Science Initiative waited nearly four months after learning of the breach to start notifying victims.[5]

WHAT INFORMATION WAS EXPOSED IN THE DATA BREACH?

National Math and Science Initiative has disclosed the following information was included in the data breach:

  • Names,
  • Social Security numbers, and
  • Addresses. [6]
