WHAT HAPPENED?
On July 17, 2022, Novant Health Inc. discovered a data breach impacting private patient information.[1] Novant Health Inc.’s investigation that followed determined a pixel used on the company’s website in conjunction with a Facebook marketing campaign had the ability to transmit personal information about patients.[2] The marketing campaign was launched in March 2020 in an effort to connect more patients with Novant Health Inc.’s MyChart in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.[3]
Novant Health Inc. has no disclosed how long the cyber-attack occurred and when its investigation concluded. However, Novant Health Inc. did not notify impacted individuals until August 12, 2022.[4]
WHAT INFORMATION WAS EXPOSED IN THE DATA BREACH?
Novant Health Inc. has disclosed the following information was included in the data breach:
- full names,
- email addresses,
- phone numbers,
- computer IP addresses,
- appointment types and dates,
- physician selected,
- and/or content typed into free text boxes.[5]
