Advocate Aurora Health Data Breach Class Action Investigation

As of 2021, Advocate Aurora Health had 26 hospitals and more than 500 sites of care, with 75,000 employees, including 10,000 employed physicians. WHAT HAPPENED?

Advocate Aurora Health recently admitted it installed “pixels” on its website that may have breached the medical data of its patients and others.[1] Advocate Aurora Health was using Internet tracking technologies, such as Google and Meta (Facebook), that it implemented to understand how patients and others interact with its websites.[2] In other words, when using Advocate Aurora Health sites, certain patient protected information would be disclosed to other vendors without the patient’s permission.[3]

Advocate Aurora Health did not report the data breach to the authorities and the affected parties until October 14, 2022.[4] Advocate Aurora Health indicated that the breach affected over 3,000,000 patients.[5]

WHAT INFORMATION WAS EXPOSED IN THE DATA BREACH?

Advocate Aurora Health has disclosed the following information was included in the data breach:

  • full names,
  • medical record numbers,
  • insurance information,
  • IP addresses,
  • proximity to an Advocate Aurora Health location,
  • dates, times, and/or locations of scheduled appointments,
  • information about your provider,
  • type of appointment or procedure.[6]
