Highmark Data Breach Class Action Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Highmark detected a cyberattack on its computer systems on December 15, 2022.[1] The forensic investigation determined from December 13, 2022, through December 15, 2022, files and employee mail accounts were exposed that contained sensitive private information.[2]

Highmark has disclosed the breach involves confidential and personal information, including:

  • full names,
  • Social Security numbers,
  • addresses,
  • phone numbers,
  • email addresses,
  • financial account information,
  • insurance group names,
  • insurance identification number,
  • claims or treatment information,
  • dates of services,
  • procedure information,
  • prescription information, and
  • other medical information and health insurance information.[3]

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IMPACTED BY THE DATA BREACH?

Highmark did not report the data breach to the authorities and the affected parties until February 13, 2023.[4] In total, the data of at least 300,000 individuals was compromised in the breach.[5]
