Alaska Railroad Data Breach Class Action Investigation

Alaska Railroad, a large freight and passenger railroad company operating in and around the state of Alaska, recently disclosed that on December 25, 2022, a third party gained unauthorized access to its internal network.[1] ARRC did not discover this data breach until March 18, 2023, though it immediately began investigating to discover the scope and scale of the breach. Alaska Railroad has determined that certain personal or private information of its vendors, and current and former employees and their dependents was compromised in the breach.[2]

WHAT HAPPENED?

Alaska Railroad confirmed that on March 18, 2023, it “discovered evidence” of the data breach that occurred on December 25, 2022, and that it “took immediate action to identify and contain this intrusion.”[3] At this time, Alaska Railroad has not disclosed any information about how long the data breach lasted or how it happened.

WHAT INFORMATION WAS EXPOSED IN THE DATA BREACH?

The unauthorized third-party that was able to access the private information of vendors and current and former employees and their families Alaska Railroad was storing was reportedly able to access:

  • Full names;
  • Social Security numbers;
  • Drivers’ license numbers or other government issued identification numbers;
  • Dates of birth;
  • Medical and health insurance information;
  • Drug screening results;
  • Work evaluations;
  • Birth and marriage certificates;
  • Employer tax identification numbers; and
  • Banking information.[4]
