Ascension Seton is a subdivision of Ascension, one of the country’s largest health systems, and is based in Austin, Texas.[1] Ascension recently disclosed that on March 2, 2023, it became aware of some suspicious activity on its legacy websites operated by Vertex. An investigation into this security incident revealed that an unauthorized third-party had gained access to the system and was able to access information stored on its files. Ascension and Vertex began notifying individuals affected by this data breach once the investigation concluded.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Ascension confirmed that for an undisclosed or unknown period of time unauthorized third parties were able to access files and systems that were supposed to be secure by infiltrating legacy websites managed by a third party, Vertex. Ascension has confirmed that in the course of this data breach, the personal sensitive information of certain individuals may have been compromised.[2]
WHAT INFORMATION WAS EXPOSED IN THE DATA BREACH?
Unauthorized third parties were purportedly able to access the following information from various Ascension’s network:
- Full names;
- Email addresses;
- Phone numbers;
- Insurance information;
- Social Security numbers;
- Tax Identification numbers; and
- Other clinical information.[3]
