TIAA, a nationwide organization that provides financial and retirement services to teachers, recently disclosed on July 14, 2023, that it has experienced a security breach. TIAA reported the data breach to state Attorneys General and has dispatched notice to those impacted by the breach via U.S. Mail.[1]
WHAT HAPPENED?
TIAA reported on July 14, 2023, that it has experienced a data breach impacting an estimated 2,630,717 individuals associated with TIAA.[2] At this time, the cause of the data breach is believed to be use of the MOVEit file-transfer software to transmit information in an unsafe or unsecured manner.[3]
WHAT INFORMATION WAS EXPOSED IN THE DATA BREACH?
The full scope of the data breach has not yet been disclosed, but TIAA has disclosed that the unauthorized third-party that was able to access the following private information:
- Full names; and
- Social Security numbers
