Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois became aware of a cyberattack impacting a vendor which it entrusted data to on June 23, 2023.[1] Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois has disclosed the breach involves the confidential and personal information of insured individuals on its systems, including but not limited to:

  • names,
  • addresses,
  • email addresses,
  • dates of birth,
  • Social Security numbers,
  • claims numbers,
  • bank account information, and
  • medical history and service information.[2]

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IMPACTED BY THE DATA BREACH?

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois did not report the data breach to the authorities and the affected parties for months – not until August 14, 2023.[3] In total, the data of 192,231 individuals was compromised in the breach.[4]
