BLUEFIELD UNIVERSITY DATA BREACH CLASS ACTION INVESTIGATION

WHAT HAPPENED?

Bluefield University detected a cyberattack on its computer systems and network on May 1, 2023.[1] Bluefield University did not conclude its investigation until October 26, 2023.[2] Bluefield University has now disclosed the breach involves the confidential and personal information on its systems, including but not limited to:

  • full names,
  • dates of birth,
  • phone numbers,
  • e-mail addresses,
  • Social Security numbers,
  • driver’s license and/or government identification card numbers,
  • passport number,
  • credit and/or debit card numbers,
  • bank and/or financial account information,
  • medical information (treatment information, prescription information, provider name, etc.), and
  • health insurance information, and
  • education information.[3]

 

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IMPACTED BY THE DATA BREACH?

Bluefield University did not report the data breach to the authorities and many of the affected parties for months following the breach – not until November 27, 2023.[4] In total, the data of 23,195 individuals was compromised in the breach.[5]
