WHAT HAPPENED?

Carnegie Mellon University detected a cyberattack on its computer systems and network on August 25, 2023.[1] Carnegie Mellon University did not conclude its investigation until December 4, 2023.[2] Carnegie Mellon University has now disclosed the breach involves the confidential and personal information on its systems, including but not limited to:

  • full names,
  • dates of birth, and
  • Social Security numbers.[3]

 

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IMPACTED BY THE DATA BREACH?

Carnegie Mellon University did not report the data breach to the authorities and many of the affected parties for months following the breach – not until January 12, 2024.[4] In total, the data of at least 7,343 individuals was compromised in the breach.[5]
