If you were forced to evacuate your home or were otherwise impacted by the recent train derailment, please contact us as soon as possible to understand your legal rights.
Officials reported that a Norfolk Southern train derailed at approximately 8:40 p.m. on July 5, 2026, near the intersection of Whetstone Street and Auto Avenue on the east side of Bucyrus. Multiple railcars came off the tracks and several overturned, including a tanker car carrying hydrochloric acid, a chemical that is toxic if inhaled and corrosive to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.¹
Out of concern that the tanker could leak or explode, emergency officials ordered residents within a one-mile radius of the derailment to evacuate their homes. The evacuation zone was later reduced to a quarter-mile radius, and displaced families were sheltered at Bucyrus High School with assistance from the American Red Cross.²
This is not the first time a Norfolk Southern derailment has forced an Ohio community from its homes. In 2023, a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, spilling hazardous chemicals and prompting long-term concerns about air, water, and soil contamination. While no injuries and no confirmed chemical leak have been reported in Bucyrus at this time, the derailment remains under investigation.³
